“5 Vs” of Big Data
In Big Data world, five main characteristics define the challenges and opportunities of this discipline:
- Volumes: data available to companies have grown in just a few years to occupy from a few GigaBytes to TeraBytes and, for larger companies to subsequent multiples (PetaBytes and ExaBytes)
- Speed: generally associated with the speed of growth of the above volumes
- Variety: refers to the variety of sources to be integrated and also to the different types of information (structured, semi-structured or unstructured)
- Veracity: the data must be reliable and clean in case they are to be processed with statistical algorithms. Another characteristic referred to here is the privacy protection of specific information (e.g., GDPR anonymization of data)
- Value: this is also a common goal of traditional data analysis. When the volumes, variety, or speed of growth of the data being analyzed are high, obtaining informational value for one’s business becomes critically important.

With more than two decades of experience in Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence, in 2018 IBIC established a business unit dedicated specifically to Big Data Analytics. The goal is to support clients in the gradual adoption of new architectures to manage the enormous amount of data that companies produce and collect today. Management data now represents only a part of the company’s information assets: to fully exploit the value of data, it is necessary to integrate it with new sources, such as smart devices and unstructured data, which require advanced exploration and analysis tools.
